Located in a lush, green valley on the highest part of the island, the Monastery of Evangelistria is a spiritual sanctuary. Founded in 1794, this historic site is where the first modern Greek flag was designed and blessed in 1807.
Beyond its religious significance, the monastery houses a fascinating museum featuring ecclesiastical treasures and the original loom used for the first flag. The monks continue traditional practices, producing high-quality wine and honey.
The monastery is about 5km from Skiathos Town. You can reach it via a 10-minute drive, a taxi, or by taking the local minibus from the port. For hikers, there is a beautiful uphill trail that takes roughly 60 minutes.
Visit in the early evening for a tranquil experience after the tour buses leave. Please dress modestly (knees and shoulders covered). Don't miss the small shop for handmade jams and unique spiritual gifts.
Emergency Info: Health Center is 5km away in the main town. Always keep the SOS numbers in the top bar handy during your island exploration.
